Participants for the pilot study were invited to participate in a 16-week peer-led walking intervention. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire at baseline to determine eligibility for the study. Those eligible were randomized into one of two arms: (a) an intervention arm, in which participants used the mobile app (START app) to record their walking and monitor their self-reported behavioral intent, and (b) a control arm, in which participants did not use the app. Participants allocated to the intervention arm completed the 16-week intervention (i.e., app use) with an additional intervention component (peer-led walking) with their assigned study mentor, who was also a participant in the larger pilot study. Participants allocated to the control arm did not receive the peer-led walking intervention (i.e., no app use). Those randomized to the control condition were instructed to use the app during the study period. If they did not use the app for the whole 16-week period, they were asked to log any use of the app (SMS or app-initiated reminders) to the research team. They were also asked to complete a questionnaire every 4 weeks to monitor their app usage. Upon completion of the 16-week intervention, participants were asked to complete a questionnaire to rate the study conditions on a number of study outcome variables (e.g., confidence of self-monitoring, satisfaction, use of WebMD and Facebook, goal setting and self-efficacy). The questionnaire response rate for this pilot study was 100% (n=10).
The pilot was conducted at the Threshold Institute, a not-for-profit physical activity research and education organization located in Sydney, Australia. The study was approved by the University of Western Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (H9679). All participants provided written informed consent. Participants were recruited by email and invited to join the pilot study during the recruitment period of February to June 2018. Overweight/obese office workers (BMI 25-40 kg/m2) aged 18-60 years with no physical limitations to walking were included in the pilot, and participants had to be able to walk for at least 30 minutes per day 5 days per week. Participants were excluded if they were unable to read and understand English.
