The Outlook theme tune was that of a major label brass band, although a few viewers reported it was the theme of a popular 1960s television science fiction series, The Time Tunnel. But there is no evidence to support that.
If you're a Beatles fan, you know that the Outlook theme was originally written for the film Yellow Submarine and was never intended to be heard on television. This version was used in The Money Programme and is far more similar to the actual Beatles theme tune than the version in the film. I like it better, as the main difference is in the opening chord that is used in the film, but I'm not a big fan of the schmaltzy ending.
The Passport theme tune was the most popular of all, and it is unclear how many viewers were aware they were listening to a piece by Trevor Duncan. I've been trying to find any more information about the copyright owner, but despite numerous searches I have had no luck. Even so, the theme music is so very evocative that the BBC should do a thorough search before creating any new versions!
While the Beatles' themes are often used in film and television today, the one used for the first episode of The Money Programme in 1971 would have been completely alien to any viewer of the series. Thankfully, there are several YouTube videos of it being played in the scene:
The Rosa theme is also very different to the one in the film, and was actually written for the film In the Heat of the Night. It was originally written to be played at the end of scenes when a character sang or made a joke. It was later used in films and TV shows, such as Roots, A Streetcar Named Desire and 827ec27edc
